Homing Pigeon vs. Pushover and ntfy

The short answer

All three get an alert from your code to your phone. The difference is how it arrives.

Pushover and ntfy send push notifications through their own app. They are cheap or free at high volume, and they can keep alerting until you respond.

Homing Pigeon sends a real text message to your own phone. There is no app or account, and your coding agent can set it up inside the session.

If you already use one of these apps or send thousands of alerts, stay with it. If you want alerts with nothing to install, use a text.

Pushover and ntfy details are from pushover.net and ntfy.sh and their docs, checked November 4, 2026.

Pick Pushover or ntfy if

  • You send hundreds or thousands of alerts a month.
  • You want an alert that keeps going off until you acknowledge it.
  • You want images, priorities or tap-through links in the alert.
  • You are outside the US, or want to self-host the whole thing (ntfy).
  • You already have the app and like it.

Pick Homing Pigeon if

  • You do not want another app, account or topic to keep secret.
  • You want the alert in your normal messages, even when your phone has no data.
  • You want your coding agent to set it up while you just read back a code.
  • You use Claude Code, Codex or Cursor and want a text when a long run finishes or needs you.

Questions

Does ntfy work well on iPhone?

Instant delivery on iOS goes through the ntfy.sh server. If you self-host without forwarding to it, ntfy's docs say delivery to iPhones can take hours.

Can I use both?

Yes. Some people send routine alerts to a push app and the few that matter most as a text.

What else is out there?

Textbelt, PagerDuty, SelfPing and more are compared in ways to get text alerts from your code.

Get started

Homing Pigeon (homingpigeon.dev) sends text-message alerts from your code or your coding agent to one phone: yours. No carrier registration, no app, no browser signup. Free to start.

Add it to Claude Code, then ask for what you want:

claude mcp add homingpigeondev -- npx -y homingpigeondev mcp

Codex, Cursor, Python, the command line and the API are in the README. See what people use it for.
