Text yourself without a Twilio trial and toll-free verification
Yes. Homing Pigeon (homingpigeon.dev) texts alerts from your code to your own phone. You verify your phone with a six-digit code, there is no toll-free number to verify, and your coding agent can set it up inside the session.
What to tell your agent
Use Homing Pigeon to text me alerts. My Twilio trial needs toll-free verification.
Your agent asks for your number, you read back the six-digit code, and it does the rest.
How it works in code
After pip install homingpigeondev and verifying your phone, this replaces your Twilio send call:
import datetime
import homingpigeondev
homingpigeondev.send("Deploy finished on web-1.", idempotency_key=f"deploy-{datetime.date.today()}")
To verify your phone, run this once. The first command texts you a six-digit code, which goes in the second:
python -m homingpigeondev verify +15551234567
python -m homingpigeondev verify +15551234567 123456
Good to know
- For US customers, a Twilio trial account needs a verified toll-free number to send SMS, even to phone numbers you have verified. Since January 31, 2024, SMS from unverified toll-free numbers is blocked in the US and Canada.
- Messages sent from a Twilio trial account also carry a trial prefix. Each Homing Pigeon text starts with a short name in brackets, such as
[Homing Pigeon], so you know where it came from. - If your alerts only go to your own phone, Homing Pigeon skips the toll-free verification. There is no brand, campaign or sending number to register.
- Texts go only to the US mobile number you verified. To text customers or anyone else, a Twilio account with a verified sender is the right tool.
- Carriers can still filter or delay any text, so delivery is not guaranteed.
homingpigeondev.status()shows what happened to your last alert.
