Get your bot's alerts by text instead of Telegram

Yes. Homing Pigeon (homingpigeon.dev) lets your bot or script send its alerts to your phone as plain text messages, alongside its Telegram alerts or in place of them. Your coding agent can make the change in the project you already have.

What to tell your agent

Use Homing Pigeon to text me the alerts this bot sends to Telegram.

Your agent asks for your number, you read back the six-digit code, and it does the rest.

How it works in code

After pip install homingpigeondev, send every alert through one function. send_telegram stands for the Telegram call your bot already makes: keep that line to get both, or delete it to get texts only.

import homingpigeondev

def alert(message, key=None):
    send_telegram(message)
    try:
        homingpigeondev.send(message, idempotency_key=key)
    except homingpigeondev.HomingPigeonError as err:
        print("Text alert failed:", err)

alert(f"Bought {qty} {symbol} at {price}", f"order-{order_id}")

For a shell script, install the command with npm install -g homingpigeondev, verify your phone, and put this next to the line that sends the Telegram message, or in its place:

homingpigeon send "Backup failed on nas-1." --idempotency-key "backup-$(date +%Y%m%d)"

Good to know

  • Telegram is a good choice if you already live in it. Its bots are free for both users and developers, and you create one by messaging @BotFather, which gives you the bot's token.
  • Telegram bot messages arrive in the Telegram app, so you need the app on your phone. A Homing Pigeon alert is an ordinary text message, so it shows up with the rest of your texts and there is nothing else to install or check.
  • Using the order or job ID as the idempotency key means a retry can never text you twice for the same alert.
  • The try around the send means a failed text never stops your bot. Messages are limited to 480 characters, so keep alerts short and plain, with no links.
  • Texts go only to the US mobile number you verified, and delivery is not guaranteed, so treat each one as a heads-up.
